Pray or Play?
There’s a reason that the best time for sex is on the Sabbath. While Rabbi’s spend their time praying to the lord, a married man who is not involved in a religious position can and should have intercourse with his wife. And Rabbi’s should also be having sex with their wives, but it’s a slightly different circumstance. Prayer and intercourse need not be completely separate entities. Sex is not dirty. It is a way of praying to God through the union of two bodies with God. Through sex God is reached. Although, let us remember that it is disciples of the wise who can abstain from sex for the longest in order to study the Torah. This is not because sex cannot be a holy act, but rather because knowledge and the study of Judaism are more holy and often more fulfilling to those who do it. It is also because studying the Torah weakens a man and it makes him less capable of performing with his wife.
But remember, Torah scholars are often encouraged to have sex on Friday evenings, right around the time they will also be studying the Torah and praying. This is because sex is not work, it is serving God. It should be done of the Sabbath, because the Sabbath is a day of rest, a day devoted to God. The Shekhinah (the holy, female soul, which unites us to the Lord) is found through sexual intercourse, which is a sort of prayer. So next time you think you have to choose between praying and intercourse, remember that both are good options.
Finally, it comes down to procreation. Remember to think good thoughts in the middle of the conjugal act, because if you focus your mind on God and your wife is guided by your good thoughts, then your child will be good, because what you imagined while you created him was holy.
